dark room discoveries | tip no. 2

I’ve been busy in the darkroom trying some news things and here’s a little of what I’m coming up with that I’m liking.  These are a some older images that I’ve taken back into post production to experiment on a distinct look.

This technique hails from the craft of processing film.  This look hints at the results achieved by "cross processing" film.  Cross processing is a procedure involving deliberately processing photographic film in a wrong chemical solution.  For example, processing negative color print film in E-6 process chemicals (intended for use in processing color reversal films).

Color cross processed photographs are often characterized by unnatural colors, high contrast, blown out highlights and incredibly rich - if not realistic - colors.

Cross processing effects can be simulated in the digital medium by a number of techniques involving the manipulation of contrast/brightness, hue/saturation and curves in your image editor of choice (mine is Photoshop).  I wasn't necessarily taught, more self taught than anything else...and then implementing some actions definitely saves eons of time.

My strapping buddy Kyle before some fred egan TLC...

But we can do a little better :)

Here's Lyndzey looking gorgeous...Paris Hilton look alike?

But with some x-processing it adapts more of a fashion feel to the image.

Tip #2: Experiement extensively with Adobe Photoshop in order to create signature looks for your images.

Ex. If you see one of my images I want you to be able to recognize it's a "fred egan" image.

Two very cool things to mention Behind the Camera this month for weddings.

First, slideshow videos of your engagement, bridal, groom session and wedding for your iPod Video.  The chic way to relive your wedding day for only $49.

I just recently picked up my iPod Video and was very impressed.  Great picture, larger 2.5” screen and it stores tons of pictures, songs and video.  The slideshow videos look awesome on this thing!

Second, why not share with your guests at the reception your “fred egan” engagement and bridal/groom images?!  Now you can with a stunningly beautiful 30” Hi-Definition Apple Display.  All the “select” images from your sessions will be in rotation all night so your closest friends and family can catch a glimpse of the passion you share together!
Here’s the best thing-prints purchased by friends & family during the reception are BUY 1 GET 1 FREE!  Reserve this for your reception for only $249.

Apple is one of the great vendors I use for my image editing needs...they simply think like I do and they continue to display innovation in their products.  It just works.

a little more personal

Ok, so I am trying to get a little more personal on Behind the Camera to shake things up a bit.  After all, who wants to talk about photography ALL the time-I believe there can too much of a great thing.  So in the spirit of living a balanced life, I decided to divulge into the world of 3D movie going with my buddy Dan.  And what better way to experience this than with the new Superman Returns flick!

I was skeptical at first because of shoddy past 3D experiences-ya know the cardboard glasses with blue tint on the right and red tint on the left?  Apparently there have been some MAJOR advances in 3D glasses technology since my tween years!  The 3D segments actually felt like I could get out of my seat and walk into the action.  Bigger is better everyone, even in 3D.

In the spirit of my trip to New York City-I bring you a couple quick facts: did you know that more Irish live in NYC than do in Dublin, Ireland?  And that more Italians call NYC home than do in Rome, Italy?!  And finally, more Jews live in the Big Apple than do-I just went blank.  Ok, so the point is that NYC is such a melting pot of cultures whereas Texas is not.  There’s just Texans and Mexans.  It will all make for some very interesting photography!!

it's all here!

The last piece of Nikon equipment is going off eBay tonight...and it has served me well-but the future is Canon here at fred egan | photographer.  All of the Canon and Apple gear is in and I AM a self professed tech geek!

  • Apple 17" MacBook Pro
  • Apple 30" HD Widescreen Display
  • Apple 30 gig iPod (for photos and slideshow movies)
  • 2 Canon EOS 5D Digital Cameras w/battery grips
  • Canon 15mm 2.8 fisheye
  • Canon 50mm 1.4
  • Canon 100mm 2.8 Macro
  • Canon 16-35mm 2.8 Wide Angle Zoom
  • Canon 70-200mm 2.8 Zoom
  • Canon 580EX Speed-light

I really enjoy the dual monitor set-up...makes editing my images super enjoyable!  Imagine viewing a RAW image at 100% without having to zoom in!  OK, I have to zoom in a little-but its the principle.

I seriously can't buy anything else...for like-forever.

Tip #1: Take care of your education and it will take care of you.

Postcard-front-ver2.jpg

A much anticipated trip to New York City is in the books for a wedding photography seminar appropriately called Xtreme! The flight is booked, the room reserved & my spot in the seminar spoken for. No trip should be without its own adventure, thus, I will be staying in a hostel with 3-7 other traveling strangers-yikes! Please take a moment and say a little prayer for my safety...no seriously, please...cause I'll also be arriving at 1-am. It should make for some interesting documentary storytelling!

I am so excited about this seminar because I anticipate it will propel me further in the artistic/unique direction I am aiming for in developing my photographic eye. Jessica Claire and Liana Lehman are hosting/teaching the 3 day boot camp and both have been featured as the hot photographer of the month on Behind the Camera. I'll be leaving October 29th and then returning November 3rd, so watch for an awesome xtreme! blog entry-can't wait!

I’m spoiling you guys with the largest blog entry yet, but I just had to show off as many images as I could since the Canon conversion!  To say the least, I am very happy with the decision.

As promised, the new wedding offering is here!  The Groom Session is a 2-3 hour on-location shoot wholly devoted to the Groom.  Designed to capture gentlemanly class, creativity and fashion all in a tuxedo, the Groom Session is a great way to truly personalize your Wedding Collection.

For this shoot, I really wanted to not only capture the elegance of  the tuxedo, but do it in an environment you usually don’t associate with formal wear.  As more and more young wedding parties continue to sport Nikes and Reef flip flops to celebrate their Day, it is apparent our generation is bored with “stuffy” formalities.  I wanted to portray that new marriage of the traditional with the  non-traditional.  Most of all, I want to portray a sense of life amongst all the stuffiness of formal wear.

This session was a blast!  The model groom is a good friend of mine and very gracious to slap on a tux in 100 degree blistering heat!  We shot over a span of two days (sunset and noon) at 5 locations.  For my wide angles I shot my 16-35mm f/2.8, 100mm f2.8 for my close ups & my 50mm f/1.4 for my portraits.  These are my “selects”.  Leave a comment and let me know what you think-I would love to hear from you guys!

canon conversion

For those of you familiar with my style, you know I promise to give my clients the best exposure I possibly can-even if it means shooting an extra session if I feel your story isn't communicating clearly enough through the images.  This promise is the reason I began shooting digital SLRs when I first started my business.

As this promise has continued to influence the decisions made at fred egan | photographer, it has veered me in a direction that has surprised some, including myself.  In order to give my clients the best exposure I possibly can, it became evident after some time that shooting Canon cameras was an inevitable move.  At this point, Canon and Nikon are not addressing a technological DSLR issue (smaller sensor chips in DSLRs create a 1.5x magnification) in the same manner; unfortunately, I do not foresee Nikon veering from their solution to the issue.  I like the way Canon is addressing it...full size sensors in their DLSRs-simple.  The Canon conversion is complete and I am anxious to show you some new images with the Canon gear.  The changes mean sharper, crisper images.  They will be subtle...but necessary.

The best way I can describe my first shoot with my Canons is to compare it to an awkward first date with someone.  I was clumsy, communication was sporadic and we didn't always see eye to eye.  In the end we made out OK, look for them soon!
